Can You Mix Cooling Tower Fill From Two Different Manufacturers in One Tower
Can You Mix Cooling Tower Fill From Two Different Manufacturers in One Tower?
This is a question customers sometimes ask after receiving a replacement quotation.
They already have part of the Cooling Tower Fill from one supplier, but another supplier offers a lower price for the remaining quantity.
So they ask: “Can we simply use both products in the same tower?”
My answer as a manufacturer is: sometimes it may be possible, but I would never make that decision based on price alone.
Different Fill Does Not Always Mean Better or Worse
Two Cooling Tower Media products can look very similar while having different physical characteristics.
The sheet structure, module dimensions, corrugation pattern and overall configuration may not be identical.
If two products are installed in completely separate sections, the situation may be manageable.
If they are mixed within the same fill area, however, the differences deserve more attention.
The Water and Air Do Not Know Which Supplier Made the Fill
Inside a cooling tower, water and air move through the entire fill section.
If different products create different flow resistance or different contact conditions, the tower does not automatically compensate for those differences.
This does not mean two products can never be used in one project.
It means the application needs to be considered before making the decision.
Separate Cells Are a Different Situation
A large cooling tower may contain several independent cells.
If one cell uses one Cooling Tower Fill configuration and another cell uses a different configuration, it can be easier to manage than mixing two products inside the same cell.
The actual tower design and operating arrangement still need to be considered.
Be Careful With “Same Size”
One of the most common misunderstandings is assuming that two products are equivalent because their dimensions are similar.
For example, two Film Fill Cooling Tower products may have the same nominal block size while using different internal structures.
The outside dimensions alone do not tell the complete story.
Why We Usually Prefer Consistency
When supplying a replacement project, our preference is to keep the Cooling Tower Media configuration as consistent as practical within the same operating section.
This makes future maintenance easier and reduces unnecessary variables when the customer evaluates tower performance.
If You Already Have Two Suppliers
Do not throw away the existing material or place another order immediately.
Send the manufacturer photographs, specifications and, if available, a sample of the existing Cooling Tower Fill.
We can compare the important characteristics and tell you whether the new product should be treated as a direct replacement or as a separate application.
Our Approach as a Manufacturer
We would rather tell a customer that two products should be evaluated carefully than simply say “yes” because it makes the quotation easier.
Our job is to provide Cooling Tower Media that makes sense for the customer's tower, not just another product number on a purchase order.
Final Thoughts
Using Cooling Tower Fill from different manufacturers is not automatically wrong.
But the decision should be based on the actual tower arrangement and product characteristics, not simply on whether the blocks look similar or whether one supplier is cheaper.
If you already have existing fill and are considering adding another supplier, send us the available product information. We can help compare the application before you commit to the next production order.
